Excellent, enduring, everyone should see it !

HOWELL, Lauren

If I was the Mayor

Illustrated by Sheldon Dawson. Three Bears Publishing, 2005. 32p. Illus. Gr. K-3. 0-9735798-1-1. Pbk. $7.95

Lauren Howell's book, If I was the Mayor, invites children to experience a magical journey, imagining what their town would look like if children had the power to make the decisions. The book holds many values for the young reader, encouraging the child to live vicariously through the narrator, a young super hero mayor who would make the world more kid friendly.

With a rhyming text, this book is fun to read and encourages the reader to make connections between the text and illustrations. Sheldon Dawson's illustrations are brightly coloured, and extend on the details in the rhyming text. Children will enjoy these youthful ideas for a perfect town, a place where toys would be free, a tree house in every tree and a beach in every backyard. The material appeals to the child's imagination and offers a great flight of fantasy. The book's simple text and dramatic illustrations empower a child's imagination, allowing them to reflect on what a perfect child's world would resemble.

5.0 out of 5 stars - One Magical Place !

It's Only Ink!
The Imagination of a Child

What would you do if you were mayor? Would you change the color of everything you see? Would you invite animals to school? Perhaps you would give your people the pleasure of flying wherever they go. "If I Was the Mayor" by Lauren Howell is a splendid example of how rare and wonderful a child's imagination can be. In this book one little boy is mayor and he changes basically everything he sees, hears, smells, and touches! This little boy's town is one magical place!
Recommended as a thought-provoking picture book for children ages 5 to 10, Howell's book will encourage children to dream, and to explore the ways they can make their world a better place. Her book celebrates the power of imagination and that that one person can make a difference.

"If I Was the Mayor" would work wonderfully in the classroom. Teachers could use it to get their children's imaginations flowing and to spark remarkable discussions about environmental concerns and solutions.
This fantastic book is crammed with fun and excitement. Children, parents, and educators are sure to love it!
